Dr. Olga Shuvalova
Chief Executive Officer
Email: o.shuvalova@ucsl.eu
Location: Office 003, Pamelva Court, 1 Anastasi Shoukri Street, 3035, Limassol, Cyprus
Olga combines a strong academic foundation together with extensive practical experience. As a Lead Auditor for GSTC, FSC, and MSC standards, and an expert in ISO standards, she has conducted over 50 sustainability audits for hotels and tour operators, as well as MSC and FSC Chain of Custody assessments around the world. Her analytical mindset, cross-cultural negotiation skills, and results-driven approach have established her as a trusted partner to clients, NGOs, and governmental institutions.

At UCSL, Olga champions a culture of innovation, integrity, and inclusivity. Her entrepreneurial spirit, strategic foresight, and unwavering dedication make her a driving force behind UCSL’s mission to inspire and support credible sustainability transformations across industries.
Ever since I was twelve, I knew I wanted to dedicate my life to protecting the planet. While others dreamed of business or law school, I was drawn to biology, joined green movements, and imagined myself standing with like-minded people fighting for change. That early passion led me to study environmental science and sustainability – even when it wasn’t the easiest path back then.

I began working in certification because I wanted to understand whether it truly drives change – or is just a label. What I discovered was powerful: credible certification, especially those grounded in ISEAL-aligned principles, is transparent, independent, and deeply impactful.

At UCSL, we’re not here to rubber-stamp companies. We help them grow, improve, and take responsibility. For example, seeing a hotel preparing for an audit by installing a compost system, launching a recycling program, or training staff on sustainability practices reminds me that real change is possible – and that we get to be part of it, every day.”
The soul and heart of our company, Dr. Olga Shuvalova is a seasoned sustainability professional and international certification expert with over 15 years of global experience in environmental management, sustainable development, and organizational leadership. As the CEO of United Certification Systems Limited (UCSL), she oversees the company’s strategic vision and operations across the forest, marine, and tourism certification sectors.

Before founding UCSL, Olga held leadership roles in international development and program management at Forest Certification LLC, where she developed strategic partnerships with companies such as IKEA and Tetra Pak, and managed FSC certification programs across key markets including China, India, and the Middle East.

With a PhD in Economic and Social Geography and hands-on expertise in international standards such as FSC, MSC, and GSTC, Olga is deeply committed to advancing credible, high-impact sustainability solutions. She has completed advanced academic and leadership programs at institutions including Moscow State University, Wageningen University (Netherlands), the Collège Universitaire Français, and the Moscow School of Management SKOLKOVO, where she completed the Global Shift executive program for visionary leaders. In addition to her academic achievements, Olga actively contributes to global policy dialogues on responsible business practices.

Why Sustainability Matters for Tourism in Europe
  • Climate disruptions are affecting tourism flows
Europe was the fastest-warming continent in 2024, with extreme heat, wildfires, floods, and droughts disrupting travel and straining destination infrastructure
  • A strong majority consider credible sustainability important when planning their trips (Booking.com Sustainable Travel Report, 2025)
  • EU policy is raising the bar for the tourism businesses
The EU’s Tourism Transition Pathway, Green Deal, and new Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) are making credible sustainability certification more important than ever

The Nordics set the benchmark for low-impact, nature-based tourism, deeply informed by high environmental standards, carbon-smart infrastructure, and respect for Indigenous cultures. However, even here, challenges persist – seasonal overtourism in fragile Arctic zones, cruise tourism testing coastal resilience, climate pressures on local ecosystems, and the need for stronger resilience and community stewardship.

In response, the region is embracing credible, standards-based approaches. Finland has aligned its national sustainability program with GSTC, while leading operator Aurinkomatkat Suntours has joined as a member. In Sweden, national and regional actors, including Swedish Lapland and Västerbotten, are integrating GSTC Standards into destination planning. Iceland is also advancing, with its tourist board joining GSTC and destinations like the Snæfellsnes Peninsula applying GSTC-aligned frameworks.

For cruise lines, tour operators, and hotels operating in this high-expectation region, GSTC Certification offers a clear way to demonstrate accountability, align with destination priorities, and build trust with regulators and travelers alike. Originally from Iceland and now based in Copenhagen, UCSL’s GSTC Auditor for the Nordics, María Ester Guðjónsdóttir is bringing a grounded, regional perspective to every certification she leads.
