The Fishing Industry Union of the North (FIUN) has gained Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) certification for the northern shrimp (Pandalus borealis) after an independent assessment by UCSL United Certification Systems Limited for compliance with the MSC Fisheries Standard.

UCSL has assessed the FIUN Russian Barents Sea shrimp on the stock status of the target species, the environmental impacts, and the effectiveness of the fisheries management system.

On September 8, at the site of the IV Global Fishery Forum in St. Petersburg, CEO of UCSL solemnly presented an MSC certificate to the the Head of the FIUN Konstantin Drevetnyak and the representative of NOREBO Group Sergey Sennikov.

Certification of Barents northern shrimp is important as for the fishermen themselves to expand sales markets, increase the competitiveness of their products, and for our country as a whole - to improve its international image

CEO of UCSL Olga Shuvalova said that the shrimp fishery is important for Russian fishermen in the Northern Basin for the following reasons: in 2006 there was practically no catch, now the stocks of Northern shrimp in this area have greatly increased and the Russian fishery makes up 40% of the total catch of all countries (more than 50 thousand tons) in Russian and international waters of the Barents Sea. Therefore, certification of this fishery is important as for the fishermen themselves to expand sales markets, increase the competitiveness of their products, and for our country as a whole - to improve its international image.

"Business increases the planning horizon and the MSC-certificate will help this a lot", noted Konstantin Drevetnyak and promised that the fishermen will try to keep the stock in good condition so that "shrimp can always be caught".

In recent years, we have seen a revival of the Russian northern shrimp fishery, which took place in parallel with the MSC certification of other stocks. We hope that for our companies that catch shrimp, the MSC certificate will be an incentive for the development of the fishery in the future
