UCSL at ITB Berlin 2025: A Global Stage for Tourism and Sustainability
ITB Berlin 2025, held from March 4 to 6, once again proved why it remains the beating heart of the global travel industry. Bringing together exhibitors and professionals from over 170 countries, the event set the stage for high-level discussions and highlighted key trends shaping the future of tourism, with sustainability taking center stage not as an abstract ideal, but as a fundamental reality that tourism businesses are to integrate into their long-term strategies.

UCSL was proud to participate, sharing expertise in sustainability and highlighting the strategic advantages of GSTC certification. Throughout the event, we engaged with tour operators, accommodations, and sustainability leaders, exchanging insights on the evolving landscape of responsible tourism. Our discussions with leading industry players reaffirmed that businesses investing in sustainable practices today are not only future-proofing their operations but also gaining a competitive advantage in a rapidly changing market, all while contributing to a tourism industry that respects local communities, preserves cultural heritage, and protects the natural landscapes that make travel so meaningful.
Albania as Host Country
This year’s ITB featured Albania as the Official Host Country, marking a significant moment for one of Europe’s rising tourism destinations. Under the slogan “Albania All Senses”, the Ministry of Tourism and Environment, led by Minister Mirela Kumbaro, showcased the country’s diverse cultural heritage, stunning landscapes, and its commitment to responsible tourism development. With progressive reforms and a firm commitment to sustainability, Albania is emerging as a key player in the global tourism landscape.
For UCSL, Albania’s role as host was particularly inspiring, as we continue expanding our presence in the region with local representatives and auditors. Albania’s emergence as a dynamic tourism destination is accompanied by a growing commitment to sustainability, and UCSL is proud to support this transformation. With a strong presence in the region, we provide internationally acknowledged assessments and expert training, helping tourism businesses align with global sustainability standards while preserving the unique cultural and natural heritage that makes Albania so exceptional.
Sustainability: A Growing Expectation, A More Structured Approach
ITB Berlin 2025 reinforced a crucial shift in the tourism industry: broad sustainability commitments are no longer acceptable; structured, verifiable action is required. The demand for responsible business practices has never been higher, yet many organizations still struggle to advance their progress in a measurable and credible way.

For accommodation providers, sustainability is no longer just an ethical consideration, it is a competitive differentiator. More than ever, travelers are looking beyond traditional quality indicators and prioritizing hotels and resorts that demonstrate genuine commitment to environmental management, resource efficiency, and community engagement. For tour operators and accommodations alike, third-party assessments and certifications are no longer just about compliance; they serve as a framework for credibility, offering transparency, accountability, and clear sustainability benchmarks in an industry where vague claims no longer hold weight.

While GSTC criteria continue to be the industry benchmark, discussions at ITB also highlighted an urgent need for practical training and capacity-building. Many businesses understand the importance of sustainability but require structured guidance on how to implement it effectively within their operations. At UCSL, we bridge this gap by offering programs that equip businesses with the knowledge for meaningful sustainability integration.
Global Conversations, Local Expertise
A defining strength of ITB Berlin is its ability to unite diverse perspectives from across the globe. This year, UCSL connected with tour operators and accommodations from Albania, Qatar, UAE, Botswana, India, Thailand, and beyond, reinforcing the reality that while sustainability is a global priority, its implementation requires local expertise and region-specific solutions.

Businesses are no longer judged by their sustainability ambitions alone; they are being evaluated on the credibility and impact of their actions. For tour operators and accommodations seeking to solidify their position in this evolving landscape, impartial and credible sustainability assessments, along with targeted training, will be essential.

The conversations sparked at ITB Berlin will continue, shaping the industry’s shift toward more transparent, structured, and accountable sustainability practices.
