Make Your Sustainability Label Independently Verifiable
From 27 September 2026, Directive (EU) 2024/825 changes the conditions for using private sustainability labels in consumer-facing commercial communications across the EU.
A private sustainability label must be based on a qualifying certification scheme unless it is established by a public authority. The scheme must include transparent requirements, defined procedures for non-conformity and objective monitoring by a competent and independent third party.
The rules are not limited to environmental labels. They also cover voluntary labels referring to social characteristics.

No. The definition of a sustainability label includes voluntary marks that distinguish a product, process or business by reference to environmental or social characteristics, or both.
A private sustainability label must be based on a qualifying third-party certification scheme unless it has been established by a public authority. The monitoring party must be competent and independent from both the scheme owner and the participating trader.
Not necessarily. The Directive does not prescribe one audit method or percentage. A scheme may use remote, onsite, hybrid, full-population, sampling and risk-based techniques where the resulting procedure is objective and appropriate to the claim and risks.
Sampling can be used as part of a verification methodology, but it does not automatically provide a conformity basis for participants that were not assessed. Where a sustainability badge is issued to individual businesses, properties or products, the scheme should ensure that each badge-bearing participant has a traceable basis for conformity.
Yes, where the engagement can be structured to preserve impartiality. The scheme owner retains ownership and final approval of its requirements and consumer-facing claim. Where UCSL subsequently performs conformity assessment, responsibilities, personnel, review and decision controls are structured accordingly.
The applicable status depends on the specific scheme and agreed scope. UCSL’s GSTC certification activities are accredited within their stated scope. A bespoke proprietary-label engagement is not presented as accredited certification unless it is explicitly covered by a relevant accreditation arrangement.
No. UCSL provides certification-scheme, verification and conformity-assessment expertise. Responsibility for legal interpretation and consumer communications remains with the scheme owner and participating traders, supported where appropriate by qualified legal counsel.
