Here’s what the typical journey looks like:
- Self-Assessment Checklist: Right after you commit, we provide a comprehensive checklist to map your current practices against the GSTC Criteria. This helps you identify strengths and gaps early, so you can prioritize any adjustments before the formal audit.
- Introductory Orientation Call: A 30-minute kick-off call with your assigned UCSL coordinator or auditor. We clarify timelines, expectations, and how to organize the process. This is your chance to ask questions and ensure everyone is comfortable with the road ahead.
- Optional Preliminary Assessment (Remote Document Review & Gap Report): Our team reviews your policies, procedures, and evidence remotely before any on-site visit. We then share a Gap Report highlighting any areas that might not yet meet GSTC requirements. You get time to address these items – an opportunity to course-correct before the official audit.
- On-site Audit: A UCSL auditor visits your property. They will tour facilities, interview staff, and verify on-the-ground implementation across the Standard. We strive to make this as transparent and non-disruptive as possible – our auditors are friendly, professional, and focused on learning about your business while assessing it.
- Decision & Certification: After the audit, an independent reviewer at UCSL (separate from your auditor, ensuring impartiality) evaluates the audit report and supporting evidence. If all criteria are met, we issue your GSTC certificate along with a detailed report. Congratulations – you’re now among the world’s sustainable tourism leaders! If there are any gaps remaining, you'll have 3 months for working on them.
